A brand new community radio station has launched in Folkestone, giving the area a totally new sound. It's called 105.9 Academy FM Folkestone and is based at the Folkestone Academy.

The team is made up of a unique mix of industry experts, journalists, students and volunteers which makes it an exciting prospect for people in Kent. The station is always on the hunt for volunteers and enthusiastic people to get involved, presenting news, mixing sound, or even presenting your own show. A number of Canterbury Christ Church students are showing their support by making up the news team. Presenting bulletins in the early morning and the afternoon for drive time, they provide the latest local news for listeners.
Set up by the charitable billionaire Roger De Hann who's local to Folkestone, the station has been a runaway success so far. Station Manager Dave Sharpe said: "The amount of support we've had for this project has been incredible."
"I've had so many calls and e-mails from people of all ages that want to get involved in someway, and we do try our best to accommodate everyone."
"It's an exciting project, not just for Folkestone, but for Kent as well."
The official launch of the station was on Thursday 31 May. Broadcasting for the first time live from the Folkestone Academy at precisely midday was Deputy Station Manager and presenter of the breakfast show, Sam Impey. She said: "There was such a buzz in the air".

"The first track we played was Empire State of Mind sang by the Academy singing group. Starting with live music really added to the atmosphere."
"My first show was a bit of a blur as there was so much going on, but I absolutely loved it."
The launch was supported by live music with lots of student input, going on air to be interviewed and also some that had created features to be played for the first broadcast.
You can catch the new sound of Folkestone on FM frequency 105.9, but if you're not in the area, you can listen on their website: Listen Here
